Nursing
doesn’t come instinctively for some women and when it
is not, you have to make a decision and make a commitment
to give your baby the best till he or she self weans or when
you feel comfortable enough to help your child self wean.
WHO ( World Health Organization ) recommends that a child
be breastfed for at least 2 years. I think a baby that is
breastfed is better than one who is not breastfed at all so
try nursing your little one as much as you can.
There is a
range of definitions to nursing as it means different things
for different women at different stages of their life. Whatever
it is, when one decides to commit to a long term nursing relationship,
the road will be a bumpy one to be realistic. You experience
engorgement, cracked nipples, leakage, low supply, mastitis,
sometimes untimely discouragement from relatives and loved
ones and sometimes, even sneering from ignorant people, at
one time or another in your nursing journey and the list goes
on indefinitely. We go through the highs and lows in our journey
with our baby and hence it is important to keep reminding
yourself about your initial commitment to breastfeed and keep
to it.
You soon get
used to the new nursing lifestyle and the rewards come later
in your child’s life as you see the goodness unfold
– better immunity, brighter and more alert children,
amongst other benefits reaped from the goodness of breast
milk. ( for more details, check out breastfeeding in public

Having a community of nursing mothers to
support you in your enriching breastfeeding journey will do
wonders as you hang out or chat with like-minded mommies who
are similarly committed to breastfeeding. Our little
forum is a channel to access that support you need. With
much sharing, a wealth of rich experience is produced and
each builds on the other to inform and educate mommies new
to nursing their little ones. Each mom contributes what she
knows from her unique culture and background and this brings
on smiles to the otherwise exhausted, sometimes confused new
mommy on the block.

Breastfeeding
in public is not an easy task for many. Some will
have to contend with over-protective or the more conservative
husbands while others are just plainly shy about it.
If your baby frets and gets hungry, fussing to nurse,
why not do it there and then and satisfy your baby
immediately? It is only a natural thing to do! Turn
away briefly, latch on and return to normal position
and nurse away! With breastfeeding tops and baby sling,
this every reason to nurse anywhere and everywhere!
Just do it! People will not stare if you are confident
and comfortable with yourself. If you have interesting
experiences to share, visit our
little forum and tell us about it! |
Periodically
when time and energy permits, I will be organizing little
gatherings to chat or just lend support for nursing moms and
non-nursing moms to make friends and share experiences of
child rearing. Do check out our newsletters
or keep tab of hot
events and make a date with us. I will definitely look
forward to sharing my own experience and learning from others
as well!
