Easter Egg painting and basket making

Objectives of activity:
1.
to reinforce learning of colours
2.
to have child match colours
3.
to allow child to hone fine skills – cutting with scissors, pasting, painting and drawing

Materials needed:
1.
2-3 empty and clean egg shells ( small hole at the bottom for contents to empty )
2.
Coloured paper – contrasting colours are good. ( eg. purple and green )
3.
Stickers – stars, eggs or bunnies
4.
Matching coloured paints – purple and green
5.
Brushes – those with long handles and soft bristles are good.
6.
Glue – stick glue is good as it does not add to mess.
7.
Scotch tape – transparent type.
8.
Some orange or yellow crepe paper for shredding.
9.
Glitter glue
10.
Some candies and Easter egg chocolates

Procedure :

1. First, lay out newspaper to cover table top and tape down with masking tape.
2. Prepare paints in separate palettes
3. Use different brushes for different colours.
4. Get a wet sponge and a dry rag
5. Get a container with clear water.
6. Get an egg holder trays – those you get from buying a tray of eggs is excellent
7. Have your child wear a painting bib and guide their hands to hold the brush to paint the egg on the tray
  8. Make sure the paint is not too wet.
9. Have them paint another while waiting for the first to dry.
  10.
Once the first one is dry, do some touch up – teach your child to spot for patches or uneven colours.
11.
When dry, put some stickers ( gently ) all round. About 6 will do.
12.
Add glitter glue as dots or draw concentric circles on egg surface that is not covered with a sticker.
13.
Steps 11 and 12 apply to all the other eggs. ( you may want to vary your decoration if your child is older and more capable and creative )
14.
While waiting for the eggs to dry off, make the basket by cutting the handle strip of the basket from an A4 coloured paper. ( 30 cm by 4cm )
15.
Have your child paste cut out / punched out stars on the handle strip while you make the basket body. ( refer to origami steps below )
16.
When your child is done with the handle, have them cut or shred crepe paper as “straw” for the basket. While you quickly finish up the basket body.
17.
When done with basket body, have your child, place the painted eggs, candies and chocolates into the basket and fill it with “straw”.
18.
Once they are happy with it, tape the handle onto the side of the basket to complete the look.
19.
You can add some more stickers by the side of the basket or write your child’s name on it and decorate it with glitter glue if desired but it would need time to dry.

Some variations and Tips:
You can make the same basket and vary contents with fruits to make fruit basket or simply let your child use it to collect shells by the beach or put in jewels and gems.
Basket size and durability depends on paper size and paper quality. The thicker paper you use, the more sturdy it is.
