Pasta Artwork
Objectives of session:
- To teach child painting skills
- To allow practice for fine motor skills
- To expose child to various art media
Materials:
- a small heap of uncooked macaroni
- poster paints
- brushes
- painting palette
- damp rag
- scissors
- glitter glue
- colour papers
- crayons
- art glue- pvc glue
Method or procedure:
- Prepare the art area – line with newspaper, get the brushes, palette, poster paints and parcel strings in place and everything else needed within reach.
- Place pasta in bowls.
- Have the child wear an art bib so they keep their clothes clean.
Prepare first set of colours and guide your child to paint the pasta pieces.
- Your role is to touch up and encourage your child if they fumble or get frustrated.
- Show your enthusiasm and they will catch the fun! It is infectious!
- Once the first set of pasta has been painted, set aside for drying and get them to wash their hands and brushes in the toilet! ( this is a break for the child – they can have a pee break or a water break as well )
- Continue the same way for the second and third set of colours. Go with the attention span of your child. If your child is tired, just do two colours!
- Once all the pasta has been painted, have a break while they dry.
- If they don’t need a break, have them colour their butterfly and bee cut outs. You may cut any other insects found in the garden that your child is familiar with.
- Decorate the cut outs with glitter glue if desired.
- After the pasta is dried, you can bring them back in and start arranging the pasta pieces into floral patterns.
- Get the child to place them as desired.” What does a flower look like?”
- Then you start applying glue on the paper and have your child paste the arranged pieces one at a time onto the blank paper. Teach them spatial awareness as well.
- Last but not least, finish the artwork with the insect cut outs!
- Once completed, it is a masterpiece to behold! You can mount it on the wall or actually frame it with a cardboard frame! Have your child sign their name or have their thumb prints as signature!
